Grape
Grenache in the Barossa
6 producers in the Barossa make wine from Grenache that has been rated, and for 3 of them it is the leading grape. The places with the most producers are Tanunda (3), Angaston (2), Marananga (1).
Grenache was first planted in the Barossa in the 1840s and was long used mainly for fortified wines and blends with Shiraz and Mataro (Barossa Australia). Some of the world’s oldest continuously producing Grenache vines survived the government’s vine-pull scheme of the 1980s, and today a new generation of winemakers makes single-vineyard Grenache with a lighter touch.
