Carnuntum.

East of Vienna, between the Danube and the Slovak border, the vineyards of Carnuntum spread over three ranges of hills: the Leithagebirge, the Arbesthal hills and the Hainburg hills. The area is named after the Roman legionary camp and city whose Heidentor gate still stands near Petronell. Red grapes cover 55% of its 812 hectares; Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch lead, with Blaufränkisch at home on the Spitzerberg, and since 2019 the best wines carry Carnuntum DAC. All 73 producers from Falstaff’s guide and Lower Austria’s Heurigen calendar on one map, with wine taverns, restaurants, places to stay and directions by train, bus and bike.
