The Chehalem Mountains AVA is a single uplifted landmass southwest of Portland, about 32 kilometres long and 8 wide, with spurs and ridges such as Ribbon Ridge and Parrett Mountain. Its Bald Peak, at 498 metres, is the highest point in the Willamette Valley. All three of the valley’s main hillside soils are found here – basalt, ocean sediment and windblown loess – with about 1,080 hectares of vines in 179 vineyards. Pinot noir makes up about 70% of the plantings.
