Rioja Alavesa wineries
Rioja Alavesa lies north of the Ebro in the south of the Basque province of Álava, with 13,178 hectares of vines in 18 municipalities. The Sierra de Cantabria shelters the mostly south-facing vineyards on terraces and small plots from the cold and damp of the Bay of Biscay, and 95% of the soils are clay-limestone, ideal for Tempranillo. Medieval villages stand among the vines next to megalithic monuments, Bronze Age sites and modern designer wineries.
