Rioja.

Rioja stretches for about 100 kilometres along the Ebro, from Tormantos in the west to Alfaro in the east, across seven valleys formed by its tributaries. The vineyards lie in La Rioja, the Basque province of Álava and Navarre. More than 66,000 hectares of vines grow in 144 municipalities, up to about 900 metres above sea level, between the Atlantic-influenced west and the warmer, drier, Mediterranean-influenced east. Fourteen grape varieties are grown, five red and nine white, and Tempranillo covers most of the vineyards, alongside Garnacha and Graciano. The Consejo Regulador counts 571 wineries, from century-old houses in Haro’s Barrio de la Estación to small family bodegas and modern designer wineries; our map shows those with a known location and website. 353 producers from Falstaff’s guide and the Consejo Regulador’s winery register on one map, with restaurants, places to stay and directions by train, bus and bike.
