Rioja Oriental, formerly Rioja Baja, is the eastern part of the appellation, in La Rioja and Navarre, with 25,191 hectares of vines in 49 municipalities. The Mediterranean influence makes the lower-lying vineyards drier and warmer, with ferrous clay and alluvial soils along the Ebro and its tributaries, while its mountain vineyards are among the coolest in Rioja. The area is also known for the vegetables from gardens irrigated by the Ebro and its tributaries.
