England has 4,489 hectares of vines, according to WineGB’s figures from Wine Standards for 2025. Kent (1,239 hectares) and Sussex (1,132) are the largest counties, followed by Essex, Hampshire and Surrey. Traditional method sparkling wine, made mainly from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, built English wine’s reputation, but about a third of UK wines are still wines, and the UK grows 99 grape varieties (WineGB). The warmer, drier east is well suited to still wine, notably Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Bacchus, while the cooler west and north need careful choice of site. Across the UK, 1,158 vineyards were registered with the Food Standards Agency in 2025, and WineGB counts 300 vineyards and wineries open to visitors across the UK.
