Los Carneros stays cool thanks to marine fog and winds from San Pablo Bay; summer highs rarely pass 27 °C. It reaches from sea level to about 210 metres, has the lowest rainfall in the Napa Valley and shallow clay soils over hard claypan. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot are the main grapes. The AVA continues into Sonoma County.
