Napa Valley.
The Napa Valley is only about 48 kilometres long and 8 kilometres across at its widest, yet it is the most renowned wine region in the United States. Its 19,108 hectares of vines grow from sea level by San Pablo Bay up to about 800 metres in the Mayacamas and Vaca mountains, in a dry Mediterranean climate cooled by coastal fog and wind. Half of the world’s twelve soil orders are found here, and the valley is divided into 17 nested AVAs, from cool Los Carneros in the south to warm Calistoga in the north. Cabernet Sauvignon covers more than half of the vineyards, followed by Chardonnay and Merlot. The Napa Valley gives only 4% of California’s wine grape harvest, and the Napa Valley Vintners count about 475 physical wineries in Napa County; our map shows those with a known location and website. 405 producers from Falstaff’s guide and the Napa Valley Vintners’ member list on one map, with restaurants, places to stay and directions.
