St. Helena wineries
St. Helena lies at the narrowest part of the valley floor, at about 120 to 240 metres, sheltered by the western hills, with less fog and wind. Summers are warm, often around 36 °C, and the soils change from gravel and clay in the south and west to deeper volcanic soils further north and east. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Viognier are the main grapes.
