Stags Leap District was the first AVA in the United States to be created on the basis of its soil. Afternoon marine winds cool the warm air that radiates from the bare rocks of Stags Leap itself, and the valley floor has volcanic gravel loams. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc are the main grapes.
