Austria · Wine region

Wachau.

A narrow Danube valley between Melk and Krems, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from steep stone terraces. All 194 producers from Falstaff’s guide, the growers’ association Vinea Wachau and Lower Austria’s Heurigen calendar on one map, with wine taverns, restaurants, places to stay and directions by train, bus and bike.

The Wachau makes Austria’s most famous dry whites: Grüner Veltliner, Austria’s own grape, and Riesling grown on stone terraces above the Danube. The labels Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd tell you how light or full the wine is. Krems, at the eastern end of the valley, is about an hour by train from Vienna.
