Champagne.
Champagne is the only place where Champagne can be made: 34,200 hectares of vines in 319 villages, about 150 kilometres east of Paris, two thirds of them in the Marne around Reims and Épernay, the rest in the Aube, the Aisne and a little in Haute-Marne and Seine-et-Marne. Three grapes make almost all of it – Pinot Noir (38% of the vines), Chardonnay (32%) and Meunier (30%) – and 266 million bottles were shipped in 2025, more than half of them abroad. The vineyards belong mostly to some 16,460 growers, many of whom make their own Champagne, while about 410 houses buy grapes to blend with their own, and 120 cooperatives make wine for their members. 230 producers from Falstaff’s guide and OpenStreetMap on one map, with restaurants, places to stay and directions by train, bus and bike.
