Austria · Wine region
Bergland.
Wine is grown in every Austrian state, and the vineyards outside Lower Austria, Burgenland, Vienna and Styria form the Bergland wine region: 243 hectares spread over Carinthia, Upper Austria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Salzburg. Upper Austria once had far more vines, with a heyday from the 14th to the 16th century, before beer and the Little Ice Age pushed them out. Today wine is having a renaissance, above all in Carinthia around the Längsee, Hochosterwitz castle and the Lavant valley. Three quarters of the vines are white, led by Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. All 66 producers from Falstaff’s guide and OpenStreetMap on one map, with restaurants, places to stay and directions by train, bus and bike.
