30 producers in the Barossa make wine from Shiraz that has been rated, and for 29 of them it is the leading grape. The places with the most producers are Tanunda (8), Marananga (4), Angaston (4), Lyndoch (3), Nuriootpa (3).
Shiraz has been made in the Barossa for more than 175 years (Barossa Australia). Before it became famous for table wine it was the backbone of fortified wines; in the 1950s Penfolds’ chief winemaker Max Schubert made the first Grange from it. Old, dry-grown, low-yielding vines give deep, concentrated wines, while contemporary winemakers pick earlier for more fragrant, medium-bodied styles.
